Why JCB Chose Rexroth — And Why It Matters for Your Replacement
JCB did not choose Bosch Rexroth for their 3CX and 4CX hydraulic system because it was the cheapest option. They chose it because the A10V series handles the backhoe loader's combined demands — loader bucket, backhoe arm, steering, and stabilisers all from a single pump — with consistent precision. PumpGrid refurbishes these pumps to the standard JCB engineers originally specified.
The Rexroth A10VO28 in the JCB 3CX and A10VG45 in the 4CX are axial piston variable-displacement pumps — not the simpler gear pumps you'd find in a basic agricultural tractor. JCB specified them because a backhoe loader demands variable flow management: low flow for precise grading, high flow for heavy digging, instant response for swinging between loader and backhoe functions. A gear pump cannot do this efficiently. The Rexroth A10V can.
When this pump wears, the symptoms are unmistakable — slower backhoe response, reduced digging force, or the loader bucket failing to lift fully. PumpGrid's refurbished A10VO28 and A10VG45 units restore this variable flow performance, not just static pressure — tested and documented before dispatch.
JCB transitioned between Rexroth pump generations across model years. Ordering the wrong generation means the shaft and port will not match — always confirm before ordering.
If your 3CX was manufactured before approximately 2010, you likely have an A10VO. Check the pump nameplate — "VO" indicates this series.
The 4CX universally uses A10VG45. Newer 3CX models use A10VG28. The VO and VG series cannot be swapped without adapters — verify from your pump nameplate.
| JCB Model | Pump Model | Generation | Max Pressure | Displacement |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| JCB 3CX (post-2010) | Rexroth A10VG28 | A10VG (newer) | 300 bar | 28 cc/rev |
| JCB 4CX (all years) | Rexroth A10VG45 | A10VG (newer) | 300 bar | 45 cc/rev |
| JCB 2CX | Parker PV020 / Rexroth A10VO18 | Both | 250 bar | 18-20 cc/rev |

The A10VO and A10VG have different internal geometry despite appearing similar externally. We maintain separate refurbishment specifications for both series — clearances, valve plate geometry, and seal kits are specific to each generation.
Your written test report specifically identifies whether the pump is A10VO or A10VG series, the variant code, refurbishment date, and actual pressure and flow readings — so there is no ambiguity in your maintenance records.
We test the A10V pump across its displacement range — from minimum to maximum — to confirm the variable displacement mechanism responds correctly. A pump that only holds pressure but fails to modulate output is not a functional replacement for a JCB backhoe loader.
All Rexroth JCB pumps carry a minimum 3-month warranty. Given that JCB 3CX and 4CX are the most widely serviced backhoe loaders in India, our refurbishment team has deep familiarity with these specific pumps.
Act on these early — delayed replacement risks secondary damage to cylinders, motors, and valves.
